Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS)

Definition Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) is described as a burning sensation in the tongue or other sites in the oral cavity. It is usually idiopathic with no clinical or laboratory findings. As well as the burning or scalding sensation to the tongue or palate, symptoms may include: lack of saliva, changes to the tongue mucosa, altered taste (metallic, bitter) and temporomandibular joint pain.  This condition is relatively common, with the estimated prevalence in recent studies ranging from 0.7 to 4.6% of the general population. Over the last few years, the north-eastern states of the USA saw a 320% increase in Lyme disease, while north-central states saw a 250% increase.
